1 Arrive Nairobi, Kenya
Few cities can claim to be home to endangered black rhinos, lions, giraffes and zebras, but Nairobi National Park is just half an hour from the center of this fun, fast-growing capital. Not only can travellers take a safari with a backdrop of skyscrapers and find the history of these creatures in Nairobi National Museum, but there’s also a thriving community of artists, musicians and trend-setters that populate the independent shops and venues around town. Game drives here reveal lions, leopards, the rare lesser kudu, giant baobab trees and over 400 species of birds.
Wake to the roar of lions in Meru, the location where Elsa the lioness of Born Free fame was raised. One of the country's wildest but least explored parks, it is home to lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards and large buffalo herds. This Edenic wildlife wonderland encompasses varied habitats including forest, swamp and savanna, attracting a variety of animals and birdlife.
Morning and evening game drives cast a different light on the wildlife here: crepuscular creatures emerge at twilight, while a bush breakfast is one of our favorite ways to start the day.
Set out for a breakfast in the bush and watch the park come to life around you. In addition to game drives, optional activities available for an additional cost include a guided walking safari and a night game drive, a chance to experience Kenya’s nocturnal side.
Naboisho, meaning “coming together” in the local Maa language, is home to large populations of lions and cheetahs — and the highest density of giraffes in the Maasai Mara ecosystem. Encompassing a variety of breathtaking terrains, from woodland and forest to a sprawling expanse of savanna, it is home to a dizzying range of wildlife including rare wild dogs. In this birdwatchers’ paradise, take a break from elephant spotting and look out for rare bird species seldom seen elsewhere in the Mara.
Embark on daily game drives as crocodiles bask in the sun and hippos wallowing in the muddy water. Meanwhile, monkeys play overhead as elephants rumble along the forest edge and giraffes snatch leaves from high branches.
Set out on your final safari day through Naboisho’s 500 square miles of savannas, woodlands and tree-fringed rivers. End the day memorably with a cocktail in the bush at sunset.
Some 20 miles south of Mombasa, the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean lap against 11 miles of soft white sands known as Diani. The beach lends its name to the resort fringing it, originally a fishing village but now a relaxed escape with upmarket hotels and lavish villas, as well as a good choice of restaurants, bars and watersports facilities. Bordered by the Diani-Chale Marine National Reserve, it is an idyllic spot for diving or snorkeling on vibrant coral reefs ablaze with life.
Make the most of your beachfront resort’s facilities, from tennis courts, kayaks and canoes to a wood-fired sauna and yoga platform — this time is all yours to do with as you wish.
Today invites one last chance to snorkel the reef at low tide or simply hang out in a hammock. Then, take in the sunset as you toast your incredible journey.
